Grades versus Extracurriculars

  Hi guys!
It’s Kristen signing in here, ready to talk to you a little bit about checking IN with your children and checking ON their online grades. We all understand how important it is to have a good balance between maintaining excellent grades while also the ever-looming importance of being involved with extracurriculars.
However, it is extremely important to note that too much pressure on grades AND extracurriculars can be harmful to children if the balance is not restored.

Stress, anxiety, depression, and hopelessness are all very real  and very harmful to children.

See this article for more details: https://www.verywellfamily.com/cons-of-pressuring-kids-to-get-good-grades-117600#:~:text=Parental%20pressure%20to%20excel%20can,%2C%20kindness% 2C%20and%20social%20skills

We know that in this career-driven world, students need to be involved in extracurriculars in order to stand out in the future on applications, both in school and work-related. And we know that there are many extracurriculars that students love and enjoy, both for the sake of what they are doing, as well as for making social connections with their peers. Talk to your children to check IN on them, to make sure that they are still enjoying their current extracurriculars. Look for signs of if they are struggling in school, if they have consistently low energy, and most importantly, check ON their grades online to see if there has been a drop in performance. Try to find out if they normally do better work in them morning, or in the afternoon?

As tutors, one of the most common issues that we see with students who mare struggling in school is that they feel overwhelmed because they end up not having enough time to complete their homework or really master certain content. Our job as tutors is to support our students in the areas that they do not feel confident in, and to truly be advocates for them as a link between their daily lives and their studies.

Thankfully, most schools nowadays have frequently updated online portals, where parents and students (and tutors) can check ON their grades. If your child is struggling in certain classes, check IN with them to see how they are really feeling. Have conversations with them to see if they feel that they don’t have enough time in their days to balance certain extracurriculars along with school, or if they are simply too tired to focus and concentrate in school because of their previous day.

At Expert Tutoring Near Me, our #1 goal is to guarantee your child’s academic success. We are always willing and glad to help with homework, but our goal is to be able to tutor and train our students to be fully comfortable and prepared to master each subject. It is challenging for both our students and ourselves to achieve that, if we only have enough time to go through all of the daily homework before our time is up.

We aim to expand your child’s greater educational mastery in order to help them to be confident and prepared in every subject. The more frequently we can see your students, ideally on a day-to-day basis, the more time we will both have to master their comprehension of the materials while also continuing to help them with their school work. The key to all of this is to be having these open and ongoing discussion with your child. Check IN with them and check ON their grades. This is truly the best way to ensure that your child has a positive experience with their education, as well as in the extracurriculars that they love and enjoy.
